Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp (MHKC)
Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp empowers children and adults with disabilities. Since its founding in 1933 by the Motavilla Kiwanis Club of Portland, the camp has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to provide individuals with disabilities an outstanding overnight recreational opportunity in the Mt. Hood National Forest. The camp offers eight week-long sessions of residential summer camp, providing our campers with a one-on-one camper/counselor ratio. The camp also offers programming throughout the year at its fully accessible 22-acre campsite. Our club supports the camp by participating in its annual fundraisers - the MHKC Auction and Gala, the MHKC Golf Tournament. and the annual MHKC Walk, Roll or Stroll event. We also participate in work parties and the Saturday BBQ at the camp.
Kiwanis Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program (KDCCP)
Founded by Kiwanians, Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program (KDCCP) is a non-profit organization which raises money for advanced cancer treatment and research through activities and events run by volunteers. Each year our club supports the raffle of a new Mustang automobile, participates in Golf Tournaments, and encourages donations and volunteerism from Kiwanians and others from Oregon and Southwest Washington. KDCCP supports advanced cancer treatment for children through the Fellowship Program at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Each year Doernbecher invites the very best board certified physicians to apply for a 3 year Fellowship Program. During their first year, these young doctors work in the clinic at Doernbecher learning to treat children with this terrible disease. During the second and third years, in addition to following their patients, the doctors work in the labs, learning to develop and apply revolutionary gene based therapies that will forever change how children in the Pacific Northwest and beyond are treated for cancer.
Kiwanis Children's Fund
The Kiwanis Children's Fund is Kiwanis International's charity giving arm that supports international and local projects and programs. Our club supports the Kiwanis Children's Fund through member and club donations such as the "Skip a Meal" program. We were a Model Club for the ELIMINATE program, contributing over $750 per member to the program ($39,000 total) over a period of five years. The ELIMINATE program is a partnership between Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate maternal neonatal tetanus throughout the world. Since the program began, 41 countries have eliminated the disease. In the past we have contributed to the to the Iodine Deficiency Program (IDD) for salt iodization, testing and monitoring, and community outreach and education in more than 89 nations.
Meals on Wheels
On the second Tuesday of each month our club provides drivers for delivery of a week's frozen meals to home-bound seniors from the Beaverton Else Stuhr Center. We also participate in the "Donate Dinner" Program by acting as store greeters prior to Thanksgiving Day at local grocery stores, handing out "Donate Dinner" cards to shoppers who can then make a donation to Meals on Wheels as they check out at the store.
Salvation Army Red Kettle Bell Ringing
Each year at Christmas time our club provides volunteers to ring bells for a day at a local store for the Salvation Army Red Kettle fundraiser. In addition to our club members, each of our five Key Clubs join us in the effort.
Imagine Possibilities
Imagine Possibilities, founded in 1959, is licensed by the State of Oregon to provide daytime services to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Imagine Possibilities provides progressive daytime services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through care, creativity and community. Our club supports Imagine Possibilities through participation in their annual Charity Auction, club financial support, and by volunteering.
Christmas Basket Project
Over the years our club has delivered food and toy "baskets" each year at Christmas time to 10-15 families in need. We have partnered with a local church to pack the food boxes with items specific to each family. We have gathered toys from a local television station's annual toy drive and our Key Clubs help wrap the toys. Our members have then delivered the food and toys to the families. Most recently we have partnered with the Western Farm Workers Association to provide toys for children.
Coats for Kids Project
South Riverside Foundation in Portland has a mission to provide warm coats for kids every November. Our club members and our club foundation regularly contribute to this effort. South Riverside works with Project Warm in Portland to select the kids in elementary schools most in need of warm clothing for the school year.
